For military families stationed at Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Army Airfield, Mililani Orthodontics is a board-certified orthodontic practice, just a few minutes down the H-2. We accept and file the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) for eligible family members, welcome families with PCS orders mid-treatment, and start every new patient with a free exam. Braces and Invisalign® for your keiki, without the cross-island drive.
Orthodontic Care That Understands Military Life
We know military families move on the Army’s timeline, not their own, and that an orthodontic plan has to flex with that. Our board-certified orthodontists (Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics) and our team have cared for Central Oʻahu’s military community for years. We’re close to post, we keep clear treatment records, and we’re a proud supporter of Friends of Hickam and the military ʻohana across the island. As a Blue Diamond Invisalign Provider, we also offer discreet clear-aligner treatment for spouses and older teens who’d rather skip metal brackets.
TRICARE vs. the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) for Braces
Here is how coverage works. Standard TRICARE medical coverage does not pay for routine braces. It only covers orthodontics in rare cases tied to a severe congenital condition. Routine orthodontic treatment is covered instead through the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP), a separate, voluntary dental plan (currently administered through United Concordia / MetLife). The TDP covers a share of orthodontic treatment for eligible children and spouses, up to a lifetime maximum. The exact percentage, the lifetime cap, and the age limits matter when you’re planning, so we’ve laid them out on our orthodontics FAQ. The short answer: if your family has the TDP, a good portion of treatment is typically covered, and we’ll file the claim for you and apply your benefit to the balance.
On-Base Clinic or a Civilian Orthodontist?
The dental clinics on Schofield Barracks and at Wheeler generally provide orthodontic care for active-duty service members, not their dependents. That’s why most military spouses and children use the TRICARE Dental Program with a civilian orthodontist in the community, which is exactly where we come in. Bring your TDP details to your free exam and we’ll review your benefits, file your paperwork, and set up an in-house, no-interest payment plan for anything the TDP doesn’t cover.
PCS Orders? We Welcome Transfers Mid-Treatment
Few things are more stressful than a move in the middle of your child’s braces. We make it simple in both directions:
- Transferring in? We’ll request your records, review the existing plan, and pick up treatment where your last orthodontist left off, no starting over.
- Transferring out? We’ll send complete records and a treatment summary so your next provider can continue seamlessly.
Continuity of care is part of military life, and we treat it that way.
Serving Our Military-Connected Schools
The keiki of Schofield and Wheeler families fill some of Central Oʻahu’s most military-connected campuses, and we’re proud to care for them: 1SG Samuel K. Solomon Elementary, Daniel K. Inouye Elementary (formerly Hale Kula), and Major Sheldon Wheeler Elementary and Middle School, where more than nine in ten students come from military families. Older students feed into Leilehua High School in Wahiawā. Saturday morning hours and a location just down the H-2 make it easy to fit appointments around school, sports, and duty schedules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can military family members get braces at the on-base dental clinic?
On-base orthodontic care at Schofield Barracks and Wheeler is generally for active-duty service members. Spouses and children typically use the TRICARE Dental Program with a civilian orthodontist like Mililani Orthodontics, and we file the TDP claim for you.
We’re PCSing. Can you start or finish my child’s treatment?
Yes. We welcome transfers in both directions: we’ll pick up an in-progress plan without restarting, or send full records ahead of your next duty station. Continuity is built into how we work with military families.
Do you accept and file the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP)?
We do. We accept and file all insurance plans, including the TDP. Bring your benefits to your free exam, and see our FAQ for current coverage details, age limits, and the lifetime maximum.
