Orthodontic Emergency Care in Mililani
Reviewed by Dr. David Dung, board-certified orthodontist
Most orthodontic problems aren’t true emergencies, and most can be handled at home until you reach us. Here’s how to manage the common issues with braces and appliances, and when to call (808) 625-5000. If you’re a patient in pain, we’re here for you.
True Emergency vs. Minor Issue
First, know the difference:
- A true emergency: severe facial trauma, heavy bleeding, or a serious injury to the mouth or jaw - needs immediate medical attention. Go to the ER or call 911, or see your family dentist first for a direct injury to the teeth.
- A minor orthodontic issue: a poking wire, a loose bracket, or general soreness, is uncomfortable but not urgent. The tips below will get you through, and we’ll schedule a quick repair visit.
General Soreness
New braces or a recent adjustment can make teeth tender for 3 to 5 days. A warm salt-water rinse and Tylenol or a similar pain reliever, taken as directed on the bottle, help. Soft foods make the first days easier.
Poking Wire
If a wire is poking your cheek:
- Use a clean cotton swab or pencil eraser to gently push the wire flat against the tooth.
- Cover the end with orthodontic wax to stop the irritation.
- If it’s still poking, you can carefully clip the very end with sanitized nail clippers, then save the piece.
- Rinse with warm salt water and call us to check it.
Loose Bracket or Band
If a bracket slides on the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax to keep it comfortable. If it comes off entirely, save it and bring it to your visit. Braces keep working even with one loose bracket, just call us so we can schedule a repair.
Loose or Broken Wire
For a wire that’s come loose, try tucking it back with a clean cotton swab. If a piece breaks off and is poking, cover it with wax and call us. Don’t try to cut a main archwire unless it’s actively hurting and you can’t reach us.
After Office Hours
If you’re in pain after hours, call (808) 625-5000 and follow the prompts. We’ll guide you. For severe trauma or bleeding, seek emergency medical care first, then let us know so we can help with the orthodontic follow-up.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as an orthodontic emergency?
True emergencies are rare: severe trauma, heavy bleeding, or significant pain. Most issues, like a poking wire or a loose bracket, are minor and can be managed at home with wax until we see you. Call us either way and we’ll guide you.
Do braces still work if a bracket comes loose?
Yes, your braces keep working even with one loose bracket. Leave it in place, cover it with wax if it’s irritating, save it if it falls off, and call us to schedule a quick repair.
