Getting Started
At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?
By age 7, as recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists, though most children won’t need treatment that early. Our early treatment page explains what we look for and why age 7 is the right time for that first check.
Is the first visit really free?
Yes. As a courtesy to you and your family dentist, we never charge for the initial new-patient exam. We’ll review your smile and discuss whether treatment makes sense, no fee, no obligation.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Most cases take 12 to 24 months, though it can range from as little as 6 months to about 3 years, depending on your bite’s complexity. We’ll give you a personalized estimate at your exam.
How often will I have appointments?
Patients in braces typically visit every 8 to 10 weeks for adjustments; Invisalign check-ins are usually every 10 to 12 weeks. We offer Saturday morning hours to make scheduling around school and work easier.
Do you see adult patients?
Absolutely. Orthodontic treatment works at any age, and many of our patients are adults. Discreet options like clear ceramic braces and Invisalign are especially popular with grown-ups.
Do you accept patients transferring from out of town?
Yes. We regularly welcome transfer patients, including military families relocating to Oʻahu. Bring your records and we’ll pick up your treatment smoothly.
Cost & Insurance
How much does treatment cost, and do you offer payment plans?
The cost depends on your case, and we’ll go over fees and payment options at your free first visit. We offer in-house, no-interest monthly plans starting around $200, plus HSA/FSA and a full-payment discount. Learn more about our easy financing options and Invisalign® treatment.
Do you accept my insurance?
We accept and file all dental insurance plans for you and apply any orthodontic benefit toward your balance. You don’t have to chase the paperwork. Bring your plan details to your free exam and we’ll review your coverage together.
Braces & Treatment
Do braces hurt?
Braces don’t hurt to put on. You may feel mild pressure or tenderness for a few days after placement and after adjustments. That’s the gentle force moving your teeth. It’s temporary, and over-the-counter pain relief helps.
Can my child still play sports or a musical instrument with braces?
Yes. A custom mouthguard protects braces during sports, and most musicians adjust to playing within a short time. Orthodontic wax smooths any spots that feel rough at first.
Invisalign & Technology
Do I have to get goopy impressions of my teeth?
No. We use an iTero® digital scanner, a small handheld wand that captures your teeth in minutes. No putty, no gagging, and you can even see a digital preview of your new smile.
Are you an Invisalign provider?
Yes, Mililani Orthodontics is a Blue Diamond Invisalign Provider, one of the highest provider tiers Invisalign awards based on experience and case volume. Learn more on our Invisalign page.
Military Families
Does TRICARE cover braces?
Yes, in part. The TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) covers orthodontic treatment for eligible dependents, generally 50% of the cost up to a $1,750 lifetime maximum, for spouses up to age 23 and children up to age 21 (or 23 if a full-time student). Active-duty dental coverage is separate and doesn’t include orthodontics. We welcome military families from Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Army Airfield, and we’ll file your benefits for you.
After Treatment
Do I need to wear a retainer after braces or Invisalign?
Yes. A retainer holds your teeth in their new position while the surrounding bone and gums settle. Wearing it as directed is the single most important thing you can do to protect your results.
Why do teeth get crooked again after treatment?
Teeth naturally tend to drift over time, and without a retainer, they can slowly shift back toward their old positions. Wearing your retainer consistently keeps your finished smile straight for the long run.
Do you see patients for orthodontic emergencies?
Yes. If you have a poking wire, a loose bracket, or discomfort, call us at (808) 625-5000 and we’ll walk you through immediate relief and get you in to fix it.
